FOUNDER’S LETTER

“Do not look for happiness outside yourself. The awakened seek happiness inside.” —  Peter Deunov

Cultivating Gratitude at Home: A Personal Reflection

Everywhere we look, whether it’s on TV shows, social media, or advertisements, we’re fed the idea that happiness is found elsewhere than where we are now. We are fed the notion of escapism—whether physically to exotic destinations or through curated glimpses on social media—fueling the belief that contentment exists in far-off destinations or an upgraded lifestyle. I used to buy into this idea wholeheartedly. I spent countless hours daydreaming about moving back to Europe and wondered whether a fresh start, a new me, is waiting for me there. What’s more, every time I stepped off the plane in a new country, I wondered whether I would be happier relocating there. The grass is always greener on the other side and all that . . .

Recently, however, I had a shift in perspective. What if I could create the ideal lifestyle I've imagined, right here, with what I have, right now? I felt this realization most clearly after my recent return from Scotland,  a long-anticipated trip I had dreamed about for the past six years. Scotland exceeded all my expectations with its breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and genuinely pleasant people. My husband and I spent two weeks immersed in Scotland’s beauty; from dark, mysterious Edinburgh, to the rugged Highlands, and to the other-wordly Isle of Skye. Despite being surrounded by the splendor I had long yearned to experience, I couldn't help but miss home. The Scottish Highlands remote and slower pace of life was a wonderful escape for two weeks. But with the aspirations we both have and the level I endeavor to scale my business to, we are, by happy coincidence, exactly where we need to be. It’s time I stop imagining home is to be found anywhere else than where I am right now.

While the sunsets on the Isle of Skye are undoubtedly otherworldly, this doesn't diminish the beauty of the sunsets I witness at home. I realized that in imagining a life of enduring happiness waiting for me in far-off places, I had overlooked the simple joys and deep contentment my current surroundings offer. The peaceful and quiet streets of our small, suburban neighborhood, the convenience of stores and restaurants being open until midnight (a convenience I deeply appreciate after being in countries where many places open late and close at 3pm), my beloved cat, my cozy home office—these are the elements of my everyday life that bring me genuine happiness.

This shift in perspective has been humbling. It’s not that I no longer appreciate the value of travel; I still love exploring new places and cultures. But rather, I’ve come to accept that longing for happiness in distant places, future experiences, or imagining that a better version of you is waiting for you in another country, is a disservice to finding the beauty and potential in the present moment and contentment in the life I have right now. The adventures, memories, and experiences that come with travel add to the richness of our lives, but it’s just one part of a fulfilling life.

I’ve resolved to try not to get caught up in the idea that gratitude should be reserved for life’s “big moments”. Since returning home, I've actively been practicing deeper appreciation for my surroundings and the little things my life affords. It’s not that I wasn’t grateful before, but it was a case of “this is nice…but perhaps elsewhere is even better”. The general optimism of American culture, the small business opportunities Chicago offers, the comfort of the lifestyle we have built, the fact my family lives only an hour away, and the beauty of local nature preserves and neighborhood bird songs have all taken on new significance. My home, which I once saw as a starting point and a place to escape from in order to grow or evolve, has started to feel more like…well, home. All because of a shift in perspective.

So, while I still cherish my memories of far-off places and look forward to future travels, I no longer feel that happiness is something that is waiting for me across the globe. It's here, in the everyday moments I cultivate and the opportunities I make the most of.

With this awareness, I encourage you to actively seek out the beauty and fulfillment in the place you call home, wherever you may be in the world. Embrace what you have and find the happiness that's right in front of you. Because the opportunities, resources, and natural beauty that exist right outside your window, would seem otherworldly to someone else in another corner of the world.

Numerological Insight: THE DYNAMIC ENERGY OF 5

June 2024 vibrates with the dynamic energy of the number 5. Known for its association with change, freedom, and adventure, the number 5 serves as a catalyst for profound transformation and exploration. This energy fosters versatility and adaptability, urging us to break free from stagnant routines and embrace new experiences, thereby advancing our personal and spiritual growth.

In numerology, the number 5 represents the human experience of the five senses and the five elements—earth, water, fire, air, and ether—highlighting the interconnectedness of our physical and spiritual realms. The symbolism of five is significant across various cultural and spiritual traditions. For instance, in Chinese philosophy, the Five Elements (Wu Xing) describe the fundamental qualities and transformative phases of energy in the universe, to the elements on earth, and down to body parts and organs. These elements interact in dynamic cycles of creation and destruction, mirroring the ever-changing nature of life and the importance of balance and adaptation.

Astrologically, the fifth house of the zodiac governs creativity, pleasure, and self-expression, reinforcing the number 5’s emphasis on exploring new avenues of joy and creativity. This alignment suggests a period ripe for indulging in artistic pursuits, hobbies, and activities that bring happiness and fulfillment. Engaging in these activities not only nurtures our creative spirit but also fosters a deeper connection with one's inner child and innate talents.

The number 5 is also prominent in psychology, where it is associated with the five stages of change: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance. Understanding these stages can provide valuable insights into our personal growth processes, helping us navigate transitions and embrace the unknown. (Reference Volume 4 of The Athenaeum on how to combat fear of the unknown here).
